I was flying into Toronto this past weekend on Porter Air, which is a relatively new short-haul airline. I have seen a lot of advertising about the company, and have also heard that it is a great experience to fly with them. Well, the rumours were accurate. It is an amazing experience to fly with Porter. So much so, that it had me thinking. Why can they do it better than the rest of their competitors that are out there?
I had a look at their website, to better understand what drives their organization, and the first thing it said about Porter Air was, “We’ve put years of research, planning and effort towards one goal: to become North America’s premium short-haul carrier. The result is an airline – and a travel experience – like no other.” Interesting. Their entire organization is behind just one goal.
This goal is what inspires every employee and motivates every company decision, and it is visible, from the customer’s perspective. Now that I think about it, even the person loading people on the ferry shuttle was extremely friendly. Everything that I experienced about my flight was premium. Clearly, Porter Air has achieved their aim of developing a premium short-haul service.
It is amazing what a very clear goal, communicated effectively, can do for an organization. Personal goals are no different. When they are clear for the individual they can produce very powerful results. To clarify your goals for communication to your self, or your organization, ask questions.
What is your goal?
What is your desire?
What lights you up?
How will you get there?
How will you know when you have achieved it?
What will get in your way?
How will you overcome all to have success?
A lot of research as been done on setting goals, and the bottom line is that you are more likely to achieve them if you first clearly define what they are, and if you then also write them down. Sounds simple, yet very few people actually do it, opting for the “let’s hope for the best” approach. The fact is, inside, you do have all the answers, power and ability to be who you dream to be. Writing your goals down will solidify them and define them. Coaching is about helping you clarify, focus and develop action plans for your goals and dreams for the future.
