Hi, my name is Michael Palmer.  I'm a Business Coach and the founder of Beyondbreakthroughs.com Coaching.  As a coach, I'm privileged to work with people that want to be exceptional in their business and life. Our clients want to lead a life where they can look back and say "there is nothing left...I gave it my all and squeezed out every drop." A breakthrough moment occurs when a client sees that it has been their own self imposed limiting perceptions that have kept the lid on their performance. Beyond the breakthrough the pathway to results become clear, actions to take seem natural and the results come rapidly.

Pathway to Courage

life_coach_pathway_to_courageA client was recently stuck in and area of life and experiencing fear of what would happen if they took a particular action. This fear had them paralyzed from taking any action and they were frustrated. Because this is a very common barrier to producing results I thought it valuable to provide you with one of the many exercises that I use in coaching which helps the clients gain insights and pathways to desired results.

The unconscious part of the brain that is responsible for our survival is always at work to ensure we are safe. When there is a perception that our safety could be jeopardized our focus goes to one or a combination of fight, flight or freeze. Human beings have been on this planet a very long time and this is the part of our brain that played a big part in our survival.  No matter how logical we are that the fear is just a perception and not real we will remain stuck until we can communicate otherwise on the level of the subconscious mind.  Like being on the tail of a dragon it can seem like we are out of control or powerless to alter our situation.  The results we want in life as positive as they may seem will remain out of reach until we handle this underlying fear.

What can we do about it?

First we must understand what the fear of the unconscious mind is trying to provide for us. You may be thinking that it is trying to protect us from something which it is but more importantly what will the protection provide for us. Second we ask the unconscious mind how it would impact us if we already had that which it is trying to provide. We can do this by asking ourselves several times what is it that this part of us wants? Then by us having that how would it impact our situation? When we do this we are speaking directly to the subconscious mind and having it figure things out for itself. What we will find is the courage to act despite the fear.

Here is a self coaching exercise that you can complete in any area where you are experiencing being stuck or fearful. It may seem unnatural at first. I invite you to put that aside as these exercises work and the part that feels unnatural is your conscious mind which is not needed for this exercise.

Exercise

  1. Recreate the experience of being in the situation where you are experiencing being stuck or fearful and locate where the sensation is in your body. For me, when I am about to present to an audience I get a tightness in my jaw and stomach.

  2. When you ask these questions you will do so in your minds eye and the first answer that comes to you is the answer.

  3. Ask that part of you that is experiencing the fear what it is wanting to provide for you? Write it down.

  4. Ask that part of you that is experiencing the fear what it is wanting to provide for you that is more important than (the previous answer)? Write it down.

  5. Keep asking these questions of yourself until you have an answer that shifts how you feel about the fear. It will seem as though you have a new view of the situation.

  6. With that last answer ask that part of you "If we had (the answer that had a shift for you) completely now. How would that impact (each of the answers that you came up with)? Work back to the situation that you are experiencing being stuck or fearful.

  7. Now write down any actions that you could take in the next 7 days with this new insight in mind. Write as many ideas as you can on a sheet of paper. When you have a list go back through and pick the best 1-3 and commit to taking those actions. Schedule them in your calendar and take the action.

Let me know what insights you gain or how this experience was of value to you. I am interested to hear your thoughts and results.
